Alexander S. Friedman is the Chief Investment Officer of the UBS Wealth Management. In this capacity, Alex oversees the investment policy and strategy for approximately $900 billion in assets, one of the largest capital pools in the world.

Alex is the former Chief Financial Officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a member of the foundation’s management committee. Alex joined the foundation following Warren Buffett’s historic gift in late 2006 and served as CFO during a period when the foundation more than doubled in size.

Alex also managed a private investment vehicle, Asymmetry, served as a senior advisor to Lazard, the international investment bank, and as senior advisor to the board of directors of Actis, the global private equity firm.

Alex is the Chairman of SBI Inc, a leading private maritime company, and a member of the board of trustees of the Seattle Art Museum, the Access Fund, and Social Finance. He served as a judge of the Financial Times-Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year award and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Alex also served as a White House Fellow in the Clinton Administration. He holds a JD from Columbia Law School, where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar, an MBA from Columbia Business School, and a BA from Princeton.
