David Silfen is a senior director of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. in New York, and is a retired member of its executive committee as well as its predecessor, the management committee, the senior governing body of the firm. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1968 and became a partner in 1978. In 1990, he became co-head of the newly formed Equities Division where he had worldwide responsibility for sales, trading and capital market activities for all equity securities. David became a limited partner in 1997, and at the time of the firm’s incorporation the following year, he was named a senior director and serves as a consultant in a wide range of activities.

David is also currently chairman and chief executive officer of Mayfair Management Co., Inc., a family office investment management firm. Among his not-for-profit activities, he currently serves on the board of trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and its executive committee. He is also chair of the trustees' development committee as well as a member of Penn’s board of overseers for the School of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the Penn Investment Board, which oversees the university’s endowment. David serves as a member of the board of overseers at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business, and is the recipient of the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award. He is also currently chairman of the Smithsonian Institution Endowment’s investment committee, and is a former vice chairman of the Smithsonian National Board.

David received an MBA from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business in 1968 and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Arts & Sciences in 1966.
