What do Seattle and Germany have in common? As of spring 2009, one talented venture partner. That’s when Debra Somberg transitioned her role at Maveron in order for her family to seize the opportunity to live abroad and accepted a position for her husband at the University of Hamburg.  Debra joined Maveron as a managing director in early 2000 and has led numerous investments, including among others, Allconnect, GameLogic, Livemocha, Knowledge Networks, and OnRequest Images.  While we were sad to see Debra go, she continues to work with the same passion and understanding for growing consumer businesses as she always has.  Her ability to identify compelling consumer trends with unique business models has enabled her to successfully seek out companies with novel customer acquisition strategies as well as companies using the Internet to transform traditional service businesses. Debra serves on the boards of each of the above-mentioned companies, while assisting the team with sourcing consumer opportunities and advising the firm on consumer health care and European consumer trends.

Debra was a founding partner of Thomas Weisel Partners LLC, leading its consumer and marketing services effort, following her time as a senior managing director at Montgomery Securities where she focused on retail, direct marketing, and the early days of the consumer internet. Earlier in her career she also worked at both Goldman Sachs and McKinsey.

She has a passion for family, soccer and travel, and can be found leading her three kids through airports, ancient sites and hikes around the globe.  She’s also an active member of YPO (Young Presidents' Organization), Northwest Chapter, an advisory board member of healthcare innovator American Well, and has been involved with nonprofit organizations throughout the years, including Local Initiatives Support Corporation, Planned Parenthood, and ACT Theatre.

Debra received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University, Phi Beta Kappa, and her MBA from Harvard Business School.
